Powered by Science
Funded by NSF, the Powered by Science project is a serious game designed as a useful classroom tool for supporting instruction in science, math, and reading comprehension. The SGES game challenges students in seven regionally prominent energy sources built around fictional cities. The final application will be built for desktop computers and tablet mobile devices.
The game includes an instructional management tool that gives the teacher the ability to set which energy sources and which cities the students investigate, and in what order. This allows the teacher to prioritize instruction to the relevancy of the students’ environment or a topic that is new to the student. Additionally the SGES teacher management tool provides classroom management in the form of “rostering” and “grade-booking” tools for the teacher to support assessment of the students’ time on task, progress, and skill development. Teachers can produce reports (grade books) on individual students or an entire class.
